Darin Nelson has over three decades of experience in Veterinary Medicine. He began his career in 1986 as a sales representative for a Veterinary Diagnostic Lab in New York, later becoming a sales manager for another lab in Southern California. After the latter was acquired by VCA in 1994, he held various positions, including VP of Sales and Marketing at Antech Diagnostics in 1996 and Senior VP of Business Development for VCA, where he oversaw the acquisition of over 500 animal hospitals until 2012. Dr. Powers served as an assistant professor at CSU’s Animal Cancer Center for a decade before becoming a full professor and Director of the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory for 22 years. She mentored 48 graduate students and published over 210 works in oncology, orthopedic pathology, and radiation pathology.
Her leadership roles included President of the Colorado Veterinary Medical Association and the American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians. She was instrumental in validating the first rapid test for chronic wasting disease in deer and elk. Dr. Powers received the Colorado Veterinarian of the Year award in 2005, and the EP Pope Award in 2011. After leaving CSU in 2018, she worked at Antech Diagnostics for three years and currently serves as an anatomic pathologist at Vidium Animal Health.
